Shadow and Bone- Leigh Bardugo

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone the Review

4 ½ Stars

The book was slow in some parts but it wasn’t unbearably boring. I could handle it. That’s really all the bad things I can think of. I loved all the characters and I loved the plot. My favorite character had to be either Mal or the Darkling. I would have to say Mal because he is in love with Alina and she doesn’t even realize it. We don’t get to see him all that much in this book, but that’s ok because the parts we do see are sizzlin. On the other hand though is the Darkling. He is this mysterious character who basically uses Alina. But then again it would seem that he has feelings for her that go deeper than just wanting to use her for his own sick desires. I don’t know who I want her to end up with permanently. Although if I was held at gunpoint and asked to make a choice. Off the top of my head I would say Mal. I don’t know why I just would. Hm. Something to question. There’s really not much to say about this book except I look forward to reading the new one and watching Alina grow as a character.
