Gone- Michael Grant

In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Gone. Except for the young.

Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not a single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Gone, too, are the phones, internet, and television. There is no way to get help. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks.

And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents—unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers that grow stronger by the day.

In the post apocalyptic town of Perdido Beach, California, sides are being chosen; a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Powerful against powerless. It's a terrifying new world.

The Review
4 Stars
I've read this book many times and it's one of my favorites. Sometimes it got kind of slow but then it sped right back up. The characters were complex and sometimes lost who they were but then they found themselves and they came out swingin. Some questions were answered throughout the book while others were left unanswered setting up the next book in the series. This book focuses on three of our main characters. Sam (Shoots beams of light out of his hands), Lana (Healer), and Caine (Telekinesis). The point of view shifts between these three characters mostly. It focuses on their struggles and hardships they have to deal with. Sam has to deal with people looking to him to be a leader when he doesn't want to be. When he doesn't know how. Lana had to learn to survive on her own while The Darkness tries to claim her for its own. Caine had to deal with abandonment issues and his biggest adversary had to be himself. He is constantly seeking power. Sam and Caine have a secret that binds them together. No one knows it for a long time. When the secret is brought out into the open you will think Wow! That is genius.
The book wouldn't be complete if there wasn't one truly evil human. Sure Caine is bad but he's not as evil as Drake. Now he is evil. He is a sadist. He cares about no one but himself. He wants all the power. He wants to control everybody. And he has a serious anger problem. Mr. Grant creates complex characters who have problems thrown at them, no kid should have to deal with and yet they do. The book itself is complex. It has so many twists and turns you'll think you're on a roller coaster.
